EVERYDAY NEIGHBORS
The Carlos Michael C A N O Awards shine a light on everyday neighbors whose actions embody the compassion and generosity inspired by Mother Teresa and Fred Rogers. These honors, bestowed annually through a heartfelt, multi-stage nomination journey, uplift individuals, faith communities, ministries, and nonprofits that foster empathy and restore dignity, not for accolades, but out of genuine love and presence. Finalists are celebrated in community gatherings filled with prayer, personal stories, and gracious hospitality. Grounded in spiritual strength and energized by a growing movement, these awards affirm the sacred value of neighborly outreach and elevate those who live with tenderness, humility, and a spirit of accompaniment.
CARLOS MICHAEL C A N O AWARDS
The Carlos Michael C A N O Awards (Called Always to Neighborly Outreach), honor the quiet heroes among us; neighbors who serve with humility, offer healing through presence and creativity, and build bridges of mercy, empathy, and hope. Inspired by the legacy of Mother Teresa and Fred Rogers, and named in loving memory of Carlos' dear friend, Diana Cano, these awards celebrate the sacredness of neighbor-to-neighbor outreach.

Each nominee reflects the spirit of CANO:

-
Called Always to show up with tenderness
-
To Neighborly Outreach that restores, includes, and uplifts.

Whether through caregiving, storytelling, advocacy, or quiet leadership, these individuals embody the kind of love that transforms communities--not through grand gestures, but through faithful presence and everyday grace.

This is more than an award. It is a movement of mercy. A recognition of the sacred in the ordinary. A reminder that healing beings when we choose to be near.
WHY THESE AWARDS?
Carlos Michael Padilla, the visionary behind the Carlos Michael C A N O (Good Neighbor) Awards, frequently reminds others that these recognitions are founded not on prestige, but on love—love for God above all, and love for one’s neighbor. His life has been defined by a steadfast dedication to caring for others, especially those who have been mistreated or rejected. From childhood moments spent seeking comfort in a simple cardboard box to facing neighbors who posed real threats, Carlos has consistently chosen forgiveness and compassion, firmly believing that every person possesses goodness waiting to be revealed.

The awards he created are not intended to celebrate perfection, but to acknowledge everyday heroes—individuals who, despite their imperfections, endeavor to love, serve, and support others with humility and kindness. Drawing inspiration from the Divine Mercy message given to St. Faustina Kowalska and his personal experience as a once-marginalized Catholic, Carlos launched the Coffee Break Series and these awards to extend outreach to those who feel excluded from the Lord’s table.

Carlos makes it clear that these honors are not meant for the self-righteous; rather, they are heartfelt gestures of appreciation for those who embrace gentleness instead of judgment and choose genuine presence over mere performance. Whether he is speaking to a handful of people or envisioning a room full of angels in vacant seats, Carlos remains devoted to celebrating the sacred act of neighborly love and connection—one story, one gesture, and one shared cup at a time.
